That happened to us too!  Applejuice was "Little Rat Tail" for a long time.
I could see the blackheads but frankly was a little concerned putting
ANYthing on her tail as she is so sensitive.  I figured if she could live
with a rat tail, so could I.  Then the other day, I noticed her tail wasn't
really looking pink..  it was blackish/blue!  Just like you described.  We
all (including us humans) did a ferret war dance in celebration of the
returning hair.  It was quite fun!  Congrats to your furry!
