To everyone on the FML:

Esperanza, Frankie, Lucky Charm, Angel and I wish everyone a very happy
holiday season and a happy and healthy 1996.

This year, we think it is very special that Hanukkah and Christmas are
being celebrated at the same time. The last day of Hanukkah is Christmas
Day. (Like Easter and Passover, Hannukah is one of those celebrations
that takes place according to the lunar calendar.)

Christians traditionally speak of "Peace on Earth, good will toward men" at
this time of year. They believe that the arrival of the Messiah on
Christmas Day ensures that for future generations.

Hanukkah is about religious freedom. About the right to worship God and
the miracles that come to those who believe. The Jews have always been
dedicated to their religious freedom, and in so doing, they set an example
for all of us to live by.

This time of year, and throughout the year, there's an important
message embodied in Hanukkah and Christmas. When we have the right to
worship God as we see fit, when we all have equal dignity, when we
have freedom and justice, then peace on Earth and good will toward men
follows naturally.

This holiday season, my ferrets and I are praying for freedom, dignity,
peace, and joy for all ferrets and humans. May they all have enough food
and love and warmth and shelter. May ferrets soon be legal and safe in the
Golden State. And may all people and animals be accorded the same dignity
we hold dear for ourselves.

We're sure the Native Americans out our way could add a few more thoughts
here, but we haven't yet studied their religions.

Linda, Esperanza (that's Spanish for "hope"), Frankie Doodle,
Lucky Charminator, and Angel (with the halo only ferret lovers
       can see)
