I was talking to my grandfather ("PAP") yesterday and told him I was going
to get a ferret. He reminded me why ferrets where domesticated in the first
place. He told me that when he was a child (he's almost 70), in
Pennsylvania he used ferrets for hunting rabbits. He would send the ferret
down the rabbit hole and the rabbit would run out. However, if the ferret
killed the rabbit in the hole he would have to plug up the whole and come
back a couple days later. He said ferrets go crazy at the smell of blood.

I love my grandfather very much and I know he loves me too. We are VERY
different people. I am sure he wanders how his son produced such a liberal
and liberated offspring. Keep in mind that liberal is a dirty word in my
family. They say it is because I am the first one to go to college in my
family - ever (BA Psychology). My family is a loooong line of hunters and
proud members of the NRA.

I am wondering if this "reminder" doesn't help with some of the food and
cageing controversies I've been reading on the FML. I don't own ferrets yet
but I am VERY confused by the different opinions and I am worried about
providing THE BEST for all my animals.
