Hello Caryl,
 
We have a personal ferret here that we got with a similar condition.  Upon
the vets exam he stated the problem was caused by an underdeveloped tear
duct.  Aside from the occassional runny / teary eyes we have had no other
problems-- perhaps you can ch with your vet to see if this is the case!!!!
