To try keeping your ferrets cool during a power outage, you can purchase a
portable, battery powered fan made by American Camper. It's supposed to
last up to 300 hours on 6 D-cell alkaline batteries.

Floridian ferret owners should have this fan on hand with plenty of
batteries during hurricane season anyway when there is the possibility
of going days without electricity. Electricity can also go out during a
severe thunder storm, as happened to "Fannie" and "Farrah" this past Sunday
evening.

In threat of a hurricane and if you don't have to evacuate, fill all empty
space in your refrigerator with ice in leak-proof containers for cool
drinking water and something cool to blow the fan over towards the ferrets
during the hottest parts of the day.

Speaking of hurricanes, you may be able to sign up at your vet to take in
ferrets during a hurricane if your elevation and conditions are better than
others, or you may have to plan to board your ferrets in case you need to
go to a shelter. You may also need to be ready to take your ferrets on a
trip if you decide to leave the state. Have innoculation records, enough
food, a travel cage, etc. (Let's hope for no hurricanes.)
