We also have fish scales, bought for ferret weighing, but we got the
cheaper, non digital kind.  Not good, and I'm ready to go for the digital
type, like Ron has.  [Oh sure, Ron, weigh them when they weigh the least -
right after nail clipping!] With regard to using a plastic bag, I don't
know how it would be with the digital version, but we all know what a
ferret in a plastic bag does!  All that leaping sends the scale to 10
pounds!  The trick is to drop a bit of Ferretone into the bottom of the
bag.  Then the ferret will stay still long enough for the weight to
register correctly.
