My guys live upstairs too.  Their cage with all their goodies, food and
water is on the middle floor and when they are out they run around on all
3 levels.  I too was worried about them staying upstairs all day, so I
did put water and food up there.  It seems to keep their weight normal
and water if very important.
 
My guys have taken over my bathroom.  There are 3 drawers and they pull
open the 1st one to crawl up to the 2nd one and sleep, then they open the
top one to run around the counter.  So I keep one of the sinks full of
water and they drink a lot more.  The food I keep in their sleeping drawer
in a little food dish.  Behind the bottom drawer is their stash, once
something goes in there it never comes out again.  So to keep them
entertained, sometimes I'll take a ball or 2 and toss them in my room.
 
Needless to say, I cannot keep anything in the 3 drawers or on top of the
counter, so I have been basically run out of my own bathroom.  My guys also
potty next to the potty and Poncho loves to watch me put it in the toilet
and flush it down.  Now he will come and do his thing when I do mine.
 
The other day I put my brush on the counter and left it there, when I
returned it was put in my basket where I keep my things.  I guess he did
not like me putting my junk in his area.  Frankie could care less, his
idea is play a little, nibble a little food, drink and then a long siesta,
forget the rest.  Poncho follows me like a dog.  I have 2 dogs that he
seems to have picked traits from.  This kid is my energizer ferret and
very smart.
