I used to use clay pellets but the only way to keep the little buckers:)
from playing in the stuff was to keep it not to clean:((.  This worked for
several years but being owed by something like 100 to 150 of the fluffy bums
I found a much better way...I simply replaced the absorbent material with
wire mesh and with the edges turned down to keep there feet dry I never had
anything more to worry about and very cheap to use.  I have been using this
idea for the past 10 years.
