I think it is a virus like the human papilloma virus that causes cervical
cancer.  Lets postulate that they are exposed to it by their mother and
it normally takes 3-4 years to develope enough to cause symptoms.  By the
time symptoms begin to show, the virus has done it's work and
disappeared.
