I didn't realize that ferret legalization had become partisan in California.
For those of you who think the claims about Willie Brown are exaggerated,
believe them! I used to hear horror stories about him in the 1980s when I
lived in California (a place where I could never return now that I have
ferrets). I was surprised he made it to mayor of San Francisco, but at
least he's out of the Assembly. I would suggest that the other Democrats in
the state Assembly are more reasonable. What surprises me is that Pete
Wilson, a Republican opposed to big government, is opposed to legalization
-- I've been wondering for some time now if there isn't someone behind the
scenes, say in the agriculture lobby, pulling strings against legalization.
The agriculture lobby is ferociously powerful in California -- they've
succeeded in blanketing the LA area (no mean feat) at taxpayers' expense
with malathion dropped by air several times in an effort to combat the
Mediterranean fruit fly. I've always found it a little hard to believe that
DF&G could single-handedly wield a battle against legalization.

Just my thoughts.
