One year ago today, I brought Charity and Sobriety home from the Blue
Mountain Ferret Rescue. Oh the memories just flood back!!! I took Misty up
to the shelter to see if she would get along with them. Well, she hadn't
seen a ferret in about 3 years and the poor girl was simply terrified! Her
eyes grew as big as saucers when introduced to her new buddies. Since I was
not well educated on how to introduce ferrets at that time, the ride home
was a real fiasco! The shelter lady suggested I let them all ride home in
the cage together. Well, what a time! There was hissing and squeeking and
nose biting and screaming! (No fur flying though so I took that as a good
sign!) Needless to say I was a nervous wreck for the entire two hour ride
home! I kept thinking "What have I gotten myself into?!?!" Once we got
home, things were not much better. Misty, queen of the castle, turned into
a little brute and continued to beat up her new "friends". I was thinking
"Ok, this will go on for a few weeks at the most and then everything will be
fine". Well, everything eventually turned out to be just fine........5
MONTHS LATER!!!! he he he he I guess some ferrets don't adjust as well as
others!

As I look back on this anniversary, I do so with a heart that is a bit heavy
with grief. I only had my dear Sobriety for 7 months before he passed away
in January of 96 from lymphosarcoma cancer. I still miss him terribly and
wish he could be here to celebrate this one year anniversary with us. He
was the best ferret a girl could ever want.

Charity has made it to the one year anniversary but I am not sure how much
longer she will hang on. She has been very sick also with the same symptoms
that Sobriety had. Even through all the medical treatment, she fails to
gain weight and seems to slip away a little more each day.

So, on this day, I want to say that I never was sorry for adopting my
ferrets....even though their death(s) have\will cause me great pain. I am
glad that I was able to open my heart and my home to two fuzzies who
desparately needed me and I encourage others to do the same.

Thank you Charity and Sobriety for being such a big part of my life!

Ode To Sobriety:
There once was a ferret from PA
Who just loved to dance and play.
He lost lots of hair
And went as bare as he dared
But he was the love of my life anyway!
