    I have been told by a friend of mine who lives in Australia (born and
bred) the following info on ferrets:
 
  1. they are legal there; but
  2.  do not try to import them.  The quarantine laws are very strict, and
  it would be a minimum of three months before they would give you back
  your fuzzies.  Alas, I am not sure what you can do...I would not want to
  leave my children in quarantine for that long.  Even 3 weeks would be
  too long!
 
I suggest you search for a pen pal on the internet from Australia to find
out even more info.  I hope this helps.
