Hi Cindy,
 
As your vet probably already knows, hind limb weakness in ferrets can be a
symptom of generalized weakness from insulinoma, renal failure, lymphoma,
ect.  Make sure your vet does at least a complete blood panel workup.  As to
the last questions, paralysis can be caused by lymphoma, ruptured disks,
spinal cord tumors, or any other problem he/she has seen in dogs and cats.
If generalized illness has been ruled out, perhaps myelography or MRI (if
available) should be considered.
