Yesterday I was in a pet supplies store and I noticed several people (older
teens) buying ferret supplies. I casually inquired if they had a ferret.
One of the guys said that he had just gotten one earlier that day. He asked
me a few questions and it soon became clear that he knew absolutely nothing
about ferret care. It almost broke my heart knowing that this kid had
bought the kit on impulse and thought it would be "real easy to take care
of". I recommended a ferret-friendly vet to him (he didn't even seem to
realize that the kit needed two more distemper shots!!) and suggested that
he call our local ferret fanciers group. Now, while I know that I did all I
could by answering the questions he asked and referring him to others, I
have the feeling that he didn't really take me all that seriously. I think,
though, that if they had told him this info at the petstore, he might have
been more inclined to take it seriously. What I want to know is ahs anyone
out there tried to distribute FAQ's to pet stores? I know that it would be
an easy thing for pet stores to hand to a new ferret owner, but I don't know
how to go about trying to get them to do so. ANy thoughts on this? I hate
to think of ferrets going to homes where their people don't know how to care
for them 8-(
