I was curious too about the toe tattoo on Marshall Ferrets.  My beautiful
1 year old Sterling Silver, Stormy has one on his toe.
 
I contacted Marshall Farms by email and this is part of their reply.
 
>All Marshall ferrets have two blue dots in their right ear.  These are
>tattoos that signify that your ferret has been neutered/spayed and
>descented.  Because of our continued use of this tattoo, the mark has
>become somewhat of a trademark for our ferrets.
 
>Because some of our competitors have begun to "copycat" our tattoo in the
>ear we now also tattoo the foot to help distinguish the Marshall ferret.
