Here's a good nontoxic way to keep ants out (we get 'em, too):
you can use vinegar to kill the ants, then lay down a line of baking soda
by the door.  The ants, for some reason, won't cross it.  The fuzzies
sometimes get white toes but it doesn't hurt them.  Got that one from my
grandma. :)
