Ferret Focus, a publication of the California Domestic Ferret Association
is encouraging California ferret supporters to write their senators before
April 25th. The new date of the next Senate Natural Resources Committee
Hearing where the bill to legalize ferrets will be heard.

Dear Senator..
 
          The domestic ferret is a legal pet in 47 states. The United States
Department of Agriculture classifies it as a domestic pet, yet it is
prohibited in California by the Department of Fish and Game where it is
mistakenly included in a wildlife statute.  Of the three states prohibiting
this pet, the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game has sponsored
legislation this year to correct an obvious oversight.
 
          Though all research shows that the ferret does not establish feral
populations, does not overwelm humane agencies and is safer to people than
the dog, or cat, none of these considerations is a litmus test for domestic
pet ownership. Otherwise these other companion animals would be banned ahead
of the ferret.
 
         Please help decriminilize good citizens who have simply chosen one
pet over another, exercising a right granted to them in Article 1 of our
State Constitution: The right to own private property (which is defined to
include all domestic animals).  This is the kind of law California doesn't
need.  Please vote yes on SB 55.
