Hi Kim,
 
You most defiantly do need to have them vaccinated.  Distemper is a
particularly hideous way for an animal to die.  Even inside animals are
at risk as it can be carried in from the outside in a variety of ways.
And, there is no cure for it once it strikes.  The chances of them
contracting rabies is virtually nil.  But if they should happen to bite
someone the legal ramifications can be serious.  Up to and including
having the animal put down.  While there is a chance of problems from
vaccinations, going without presents a far greater chance.
