Dr. Max - There is a very good book out on pherret physiology called "Biology
and Diseases of the Ferret" By Dr. James G. Fox. It's a hardcover textbook.
It runs about $45 and is available through Ferret Fair in Westmont, IL. Dr.
Fox is currently working with Dr. Susan Erdmann at MIT on Lymphomas and the
latest word is that certain lymphomas are communicable. We have three guys at
the shelter that are kept in isolation because they are lymphoma positive.
They are due to be shipped to MIT to contribute to the research on Lynmphoma.
Before any ARists out there start jumping on this, let me explain what their
'contribution' will be.
(1) They will not be vivisected. Blood samples will be taken when needed for
study.
(2) They will be spaciously housed and monitored by humans who care 24 hours
a day. Dr. Brown , our clubs Veterinary Advisor, has visited the MIT facility
and has aassured us that they will not be euthanized unless the quality of
life is so low that it would be in the ferrets best interests to do so.

Dr. Erdman has a survey out that may help in her research. If you have 8 or
more ferrets, I'll send anyone a copy for the price of a SASE. She feels that
they are only about THREE MONTHS away from discovering a cure for these guys.
In any case, we are making the results of the Census available to her when
it is completed.
