I raise orphaned baby possums until they are old enough to be released.
They DO kinda look like baby ferrets if you can't see their tail.  I have
even had people comment on the cute baby ferrets (of course, they know I
have ferrets).  The baby possums are sable-colored and even have a blaze on
their forehead, that is, a dark blaze running down into their white face.
 
The "mites" on the tail may, in fact, be blackheads.  Try using Oxy-Pads or
something similar.
