I guess what's most important is that 1) you can afford it financially,
including vet bills.  and 2) that you have other friends in the ferret
community who are your backups, just in case something happens.  In other
words, if you were to become ill, or have an accident, or God forbid, pass
away, you should always have a buddy system with other ferret owners in
your area, where you check in with each other.
 
After hearing stories about people having accidents or passing away leaving
ferrets behind, there has to be a backup network of ferret-friendly people,
whether you have one ferret, or twenty.  Right now, think of who you could
count on if something like that were to happen to you.  That is why it's a
very good idea to become involved in a ferret organization in your area,
where you regularly keep in touch with others, and develop a buddy system.
If there aren't any groups in your area, form your own.  Post notices in
pet stores, or other public places and try to get other interested people
involved.
