Walk-a-thon Questions

Has anyone out there ever done a walk-a-thon in an effort to raise money
for a good cause (i.e., CROP walk or food walk)?  I am wondering how I can
apply a walk-a-thon fundraiser for the shelter in the warmer months--anyone
know how to do it?  I sure would appreciate your expertise.  I was also
thinking of holding a skate-a-thon, as we have a local skating arena here.
