We use baby gates to keep our kids confined to their room during the day,
and then to keep them out of the kitchen when they are out in the whole
apartment.  We have had no problems................
 
We have made one alteration though, we have duck taped cardboard over the
front of the whole thing, that way they can't climb over it, or go thru
the holes..............It has worked WONDERFULLY for us.
