Another option to look into:
 
In Yahoo!  Groups, there is a group called Truck N Paws.  It is an all
breed group dedicated to transporting rescues.  It must be a genuine
rescue situation, from rescue to foster/forever home.  Everyday there
are at least 2-3 major transportations arranged.
 
I had tried to volunteer with the Ferrets Across America over a year or
two ago, and it never seemed to need my help, so I signed up with Truck N
Paws.  It is mostly dogs, but there is an occasional ferret.  The
community is larger, so there is a much higher chance of success.
