It has been about 5 years since any of mine have needed it, but when
they did, my vet would purchase generic diazoxide and compound it
herself, in ferretone. I would then mix it in duck soup, as it is
second only to Flagyl for its horrible, bitter, biting flavor. The
price was far better ... I paid $130 for 30 mL of name brand Proglycem,
and my vet charged me only $50 for 30 mL ... so I imagine you could
still see a big saving. And yes, it can be compounded without the
mint - all my ferrets have hated mint, and I prefer unflavored, so I
can hide it in duck soup. I also understand that some ferret owners
have not seen any benefit from Proglycem/diazoxide, but all of mine did
very well on a combination of diazoxide + prednisone - once diagnosed
and treatment was started they never had a low blood sugar episode,
and all eventually passed away from other causes. Oh, and I always
gave duck soup 2-3 times a day as well, which I am sure also helped.
