Yes, people and ferrets do indeed both get 1mg per day of melatonin.  In
people it is usually used for sleep disorders and jet lag.  In ferrets it
is used to down regulate the hormones that are stimulating the adrenal
glands and to grow the winter fur coat.  Melatonin also has some
antiinflammatory properties via anti-lipoxygenase activity.
