Folks,
 
There was much weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth recently over the
word defects when used in conjunction with the word genetic.  The term
defect is appropriate, and scientific, regardless of its emotional index.
A genetic defect is any trait that, rather than enhancing a creature's
ability to survive, impedes it.  If the trait makes no impact, it is
considered genetically neutral.  Color traits that do not have health
issues attached are neutral.  Neural crests are not.
 
This list boasts a number of people who are conversant with proper
terminology.  Rather than flying into a rage and defending your ferrets
when you read such a term, it would be well for us to learn the
scientific language.  The ability to understand scientific terminology
will give you an advantage in many areas, particularly when you are
dealing with a vet or studying any area of ferret health.
