I recently posted a question concerning the use of tamoxifen in ferrets.
I have received one message concerning the use of it in ferrets and it
indicated no help with the ferret.  Since this message, Dr McCabe contacted
Dr Karen Rosenthal reference the tamoxifen question and the response was a
surprise.  The effect of this material is opposite the effect in humans and
should not be used to treat adrenal disease in ferrets.  The material Dr.
Rosenthal recommended trying is flutamide.  I am currently using this on
one female with high numbers from the TN panel( previous bi-lateral
adrenalectomy ) and a very swollen vulva.  Antibiotics did not phase the
swelling.  The other ferret is a male with possible prostate swelling
(previous bladder surgery for blockage--BoBo the catheter fellow- and with a
normal urine ph).  The dosage is 10 mg/kg body wgt.  I am using a compounded
brew of ferritone and flutamide such that the resulting dosage is 0.2 cc of
compound / kg of body weight.  A thirty day supply was about 40 dollars for
the two.  I will keep the list posted as to progress or other as often as i
can.  This is an interesting material and seems to be in competition with
the lupron treatment at pennies on the dollar.  I would like any feedback on
others that have used this material.  It is used in humans to treat prostate
cancer for one.
