Finnegan used to dig at his food bowl, until I changed it.  What I use now is
a sort of rectangular/oval plate (actually one of those "free gifts" from the
cosmetics counter, for soap or some such...).  He rarely spills any now.  My
theory is that the little guys don't like to eat with their heads inside of
things... because after used to spill stuff out of his dish, he would have no
problem eating it & would no longer play with it.
