In one of Frank Herbert's Dune books (not the first one) there is a
reference to the Castle Ferrets.  These cute carpet snakes have free roam of
the castle.  They are trained to "attack" intruders.
 
Interesting... When I first read this I fell out of my chair laughing.  All
I could imagin were about 40 + ferrets trying to lick some poor intruder to
death.
