I don't know about what to put in a carpet cleaning machine itself, but I
have had awesome luck with the squirt bottle of Resolve for Pet Stains and
Odor.  Spray it on and scrub it off with a brush.  Voila!  I have never
had a stain on my rugs when using this cleaner; I usually try to catch
the spots when they're "fresh".
 
Another note...my 140lb Rottweiler (yes he's huge!) had a horrible bout of
diarrhea on my green and white diningroom rug.  It was a huge area and
that Resolve took every smidgeon up...not a sign of any stain or oder!
