I acquired a nice comfy La Z Boy recliner before I got my fuzzbutts and
didn't want to give up either, so this is what I did. My recliner has the
base which allows it to rotate. I turned it over, removed the flat wooden
base (four bolts undone through a hole in the base) and stapled a heavy
fabric all the way around the opening. The area where the two telescoping
supports for the footrest come out was handled by slitting the fabric and
sewing it up so the chair still extended, but the holes weren't huge - I
can't have the footrest extended with the furballs out, but I didn't use it
much anyway. A slit was made for each of the four bolts and the base was
reattached. You still have to be careful about rocking it back all the way,
but you can still express your right to plant your butt in a comfy chair.

My Sabrina (the devious, sneaky, cute as heck female) managed to pop a
couple of staples and get into this neat new space once so I had to sew the
cloth to the cloth of the chair around the areas where she could get a good
purchase with her claws.

Since I've done that, there have been no further breaches, although I check
it regularly to make sure there's no chance of an accident.

If you're unsure of your stapling/sewing talents (I never let a lack of
talent stop me from doing something...), perhaps a local reupholstery shop
could help.
