Connie,
The reason ferrets cost so much is that it prevents people from buying them
on impulse.  Also, when people spend "alot" of money on a pet, they are
more likely to take better care of it... to "protect" their "investment".
Can you imagine the disasterous situation if ferrets were only $20 or so?
People would be buying those adorable little things by the dozens without
any thought as to the proper way to care for them.  And when they bit
and/or grew up and weren't "adorable" any more, the shelters would be
filling up fast!  Low purchase prices often result in the mindset that
animals are disposable...people think, "Oh, well, I *only* spent $30
dollars for it..."
