The lump you're describing is not an unusual occurance with almost any kind
of injection.  Occassionaly some of the liquid will get into subcutaneous
fat and cause a mild inflamatory reaction.  As your vet pointed out, these
are perfectly harmless and usually disappear in a month or so.
