For Immediate Release

Ferret Man Running For Lieutenant Governor

Pat Wright, twice prosecuted and once jailed over domestic ferrets
announces his campaign for Lieutenant Governor as a Libertarian Party
candidate.

Wright was chairman of the Libertarian Party of California during
1991-1993. In September 1993 he founded an organization of California
ferret lovers called FERRETS ANONYMOUS. That organization grew to 6,000
members when Wright left the chairmanship in 1999.

In February 2000 Wright spent 17 days at the George Bailey
maximum-security jail on charges of possession of a wild animal without a
permit and brandishing a weapon at a police officer. No discussion was
allowed at Wright s trial that ferrets are domestic animals, and at
sentencing Judge Coates admonished Wright that people who want to change
the law should be prepared to go to jail. Judge Coates also said that if
the law said we wear red shoes we d better wear red shoes . He said we
had a right to try to change the law, but until the law is changed we
should wear red shoes. That kind of thinking is an anathema to any body
who values their liberty and is the inspiration for this campaign.

A campaign kick off party is scheduled for Friday, November 16th at the
King s Inn, 1333 Hotel Circle South in San Diego. The evening s schedule
is 6 pm no-host cocktails, 6:30 pm ferret races, dinner is at 7 and
program is at 8.

Ferret Legalization Lawsuit Filed

In light of the defeat of ferret-amnesty bill SB 1093, Wright s attorney
George Weingarten on October 26th filed suit on Wright s behalf over the
state s ferret ban. The argument is basically that our ferrets are
domestic, the state constitution authorizes Californians to own domestic
animals and owners of domestic ferrets are treated differently.

Wright s campaign is ten years in the making. During that time Wright
has seen how politics works in Sacramento and it doesn t work for those
without political clout, no matter how just the cause.

The campaign hopes to bring ferret owners into Ferrets Anonymous, and show
to voters the benefit of supporting the only political party that is based
on the simple premise that people should be free to do as they please as
long as they don t harm others. Ten years of accepting compromises from
the Wilson and Davis administration have only accomplished disappointment
for California ferret lovers.
