You're doing fine with the food.  Regular ferret food softened so that
their little teeth can deal with it, possibly supplemented with meat baby
food or a/d, is just the thing.  And as far as the vaccine reactions, I'm
very glad that your vet hasn't seen any so far, but if he deals with many
ferrets, he will.  It is decidedly not a myth.
 
For their shots - try distracting them with something yummy as he gives
the shot.  I generally use Ferretone or Nutrical, and the ferrets tend to
not even notice the needle pinch.
