About bluffing your way through airports with ferrets:

I don't know how it is in the rest of the country, but apparently the US
Goverment made a request for airports to beef up current security. Here
at DIA in Denver, that means any luggage left unattended for any length of
time gets confiscated and searched, they have the right to search any or
all of your luggage (including carry-ons) and such things. Which would
probably mean, since carry on pets don't normally go through the x ray
machine, they will probably be searched. This isn't the time to lie and
say you have a rabbit -- make sure your butt is covered legally.

Meet my pets. The ferrets (Taz, Coffee, Daphne, Tia, Gretchen and Nameless),
the gerbils (31 permanent residents and various babies), the zebra mouse
(Racer), the rats (five of them), the budgie (Sky), the cockatiel (Summer),
and the fish (various).
