I would like to ask everyone on this list to make one New Year's
resolution, one that could be more important than you realize. In any
way you can, take an extra step in 2009 to help our a ferret shelter.
Almost every shelter out there needs money and supplies, but they also
need just a little of your time. If you live reasonably close to a
shelter, then offer to help out. Even a couple of hours once a week,
or once every other week, doing some basic chores like cleaning, could
mean a great deal. These shelter moms and dads work without relief
every day of every week of every month of every year. They seldom get
much of a break from all of the time needed to care for the sick, to
screen prospective new owners, to find new ways to raise money, and to
maintain their shelters as healthy environments for all of the little
ones. And don't forget that most of the ferrets in these shelters have
come from bad homes where they didn't get the care or attention they
need. The more love and attention they get now from volunteers, the
better their lives will become.

As for those who don't live near a shelter, then resolve to help out
just a little more this year financially. Buy a few more raffle
tickets, make a few more donations, or send supplies. Things are tough
right now for most of us, but they're even tougher for the shelters,
and it DOES feel really good to know that you have done something to
help those ferrets and shelters that really appreciate knowing that
someone else out there cares. Do it to honor the memory of your ferrets
who have passed on to the bridge. Do it in appreciation for all of the
shelter moms and dads who take the time to share their wealth of
experience and knowledge on this list. Or just do it because you're a
good person who cares.
