The question presented:

Q: "If ferrets are so domesticated, why do they stalk other animals....one
of my ferrets all but killed a very expensive bird...."

Changed ever so slightly to:

Q: "If people are so domesticated, why do they stalk other animals...one
person I know delights in killing nearly extinct or endangered animals..."

or:

Q. "If people are so domesticated, why do they stalk other people...."

Given the last two versions of the question - the instinct issue makes
quite a bit more sense to me....
