Two of my three ferrets had bad reactions to pine earlier this year.  The
area around their nails became very inflamed.  I didn't know what caused
it, until I went to a vet who asked if I'd changed anything in their
surroundings lately.  I said I just started using pine litter about a
month before.  He suggested switching litters, and as soon as I switched
back to recycled newspaper pellets, it cleared up.
 
If you decide to try pine litter, just be sure you check your ferret's
feet for any signs of redness or puffiness.
