Another quick way to provide safety to the shelves is to get a sheet of
Plastex from Home Depot (Thanks, Kathy) and cut up pieces large enough
to cover the shelf and the extra space. Then drill holes in it and
fasten to the shelf with zip cable ties. Trim off the extra length
after you've tightened them.

Plastex is a 4x8 sheet of solid 1/8" thick polyethylene made for
covering walls. Just mark the size and cut with a heavy duty scissors
or a utility knife and straightedge. The extra can be used for covering
any floors in wire cages. I still put some kind of cloth on the floors
anyway, fleece, blanket, flannel, etc.

For the ramps I cut strips of non-fuzzy polyester blanket (the cheap
type less that $5 at Wal-Mart) and fasten them to the ramps with six
little 2" clamps. Cut them about 3" wider than the ramp to allow enough
to turn under to be clamped in place.

If you can't find the Plastex ask about it. It is there but in
different places in each store. It will be in back by the glazing.
rice $19.99 per sheet.
