What is the American Ferret Association?

Their mission (from their web site http://www.ferret.org/)

  PROMOTE:
To promote the domestic ferret as a companion animal through public
education such as shows, newsletters, legislative education, etc.

  PROTECT:
To help protect the domestic ferret against anti-ferret legislation,
mistreatment, unsound breeding practices and overpopulation, needless
scientific research, and any practice deemed to lower the health
standards or survivability of the animal.

  PROVIDE:
To provide constant and up-to-date information on vets, research data,
rescue shelters and other information of interest to ferret owners.

This past summer AFA sponsored the Eighth Small Mammal Veterinary Conference
in Baltimore, Maryland and they will probably sponser the next one this
coming summer. Most of the important ferret vets in the country were there.
Dr. Judi Bell who is probably the single most knowledgeable vet on ferrets
in the entire country was the keynote speaker.

Why does the AFA have shows?

Purpose: Provide a forum open to all ferret enthusiasts to promote
the education about the domestic pet ferret.

  Goals:
  1. Promote education about the domestic pet ferret to the public,
breeders, medical & the commercial communities.
  2. Promote for the improvement of the species (M .putorius furo)
  3. Improve and enhance the public's view of this species.
  4. Promote the importance of routine vaccinations.
