Jeanette Phillips wrote about her ferrets response to whistling and asked if
anybody else had seen this phenomenon.

we havent tried whistling but Misha is fascinated whenever Bill plays the
flute. he will either stop & stare at the flute intently, or will try &
sniff all over it to figure out what's going on. He also had this reaction
to a penny whistle. it's really funny becaus of course the second we let
him have the penny-whistle to check out it stops making noise & He doesnt
seem to understand why. Bill's flute is a walking flute about 5 feet long
so Misha can climb on it while Bill is still playing. (We've taken a photo
I hope comes out of Misha sniffing at the mouthpiece - it looked like he was
trying to play the flute...)

Bill pointed out that he really notices the slightly off notes more than the
true ones. Maybe my ferret is a musical snob? He's also incredibly fond of
squeaky toys which make a similar high pitched sound.
