I just read Tara's post about being careful before placing a free pet.
She raises a very good concern that's been mentioned before.  I also hate
to see someone giving up a pet, looking for a (hopefully good) home for
it, and then asking for money in return.  I think a good alternative is
to have the person adopting the pet give a check for an animal shelter as
payment.  This way the person giving the unwanted pet a home doesn't have
to feel like they're paying for the privledge of helping this person (and
pet) out.  Most animal lovers (even if money is tight) would be happy
knowing the money was going to a shelter to help more animals.
 
Just my opinion.
