ferrets digging up carpet

What can I do about my ferret trying to dig up the carpet.  She is enclosed
in a room when I am home and she tries to dig under the baby gate that I am
using.  I've used bitter apple and she doesn't seem to care.  Help!!  She's
ruining my carpet.
