I did this with my couch, and it seems to be successful so far, except, like
David's ferret, Potpie will zip under the couch at first opportunity and
*scratchscratch* until she's exhausted.  Silly kid.  I used a cheap denim
from the fabric store and staple-gunned it to the frame.
