I drove my ferrets about 7 hours each way last Xmas & I expect to do the
same this year.  I got a medium-size dog carrier, big enough for a small
cat litter-box and a sleepsack on the bottom.  I hung their hammock over
the whole assembly, from the air vents on top of the carrier.  I made sure
they were in the carrier for a while before setting off- I let them run
their batteries all the way down then put them in for about an hour before
leaving.
 
They were excited for a bit when we started out, but they calmed down
pretty quick once we were on the way.  I had a book-on-tape running and I
think (no real evidence though) that the droning sound helped calm them
down.  I stopped every hour or so to check on them and their provisions;
I'd originally wanted to take them out on a leash but it was too cold and
too much of a pain to get at the cage in the back seat of a 2-door car.
