site itself is wonderful, so if you haven't used it yet here is

Obviously, avoid the physical punishment that some of the links from
it mention.

Oh, and about 10 years ago I was taught that when a ferret is scared of
hands instead pick up the ferret with a thick cloth at first so that
the hand shape is not seen but the ferret gets used to being cuddled
and held.
