Wolfy... I LOVED your post.  I, too, suffer from these ferret afflictions.
 
Ferret fun boxes... I've never used a rice box, but I have given my ferrets
a box filled with shredded paper.  They LOVED it.  One of the cats decided
to ruin the fun when she used it as a litter box... ARGH.  My advice would
be to use a container with a lid and cut ferret-sized holes for entry/exit.
Hmm... maybe I should add that to the wal-mart list...
