Well, folks, it looks like the entire argument was moot.  I happened to
log into my old account (where I do have Usenet access) and what seemed
like a million new newsgroup scrolled by, including...TA-DA  alt.pets.ferrets
 
and so ends the argument on whether or not it's a good idea :0

a relatively minor entity - most anyone can start those.  The debate was about
rec.pets.ferrets which is a *very* different thing.   BIG]
